March Math News

We will continue to work on Subtraction skills to either 10 or 20. We will use a workmat to work on whole- part/part concepts in additon and subtraction. We will learn about Related Facts and Fact Families (i.e. 5 + 4 = 9, 4 + 5 = 9, 9 - 4 = 5 and 9 - 5 = 4). We will use linking cubes in two colors to make related facts (i.e. 8 + 4 = 12 and 4 + 8 = 12) in pairs (one person will write the problem and the other will count out the linking cubes).

Then we will start a Geometry and Fractions Unit. We will learn the basic 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle, rectangular prism, cube, sphere, cone, pyramid). We will sort shapes by more than one attribute (i.e. has 3 corners, is blue, is small, has 4 sides, etc.). We will learn about symmetry and how to divide objects in half. We will also learn about classifying objects.

February Math News

In February, my Math Class will be learning to add 1-digit numbers with sums to 10 and to subtract numbers from 10. The more advanced in this group will be adding numbers to 18 and subtracting numbers from 18.

The 100th Day of School is February 6th! In My math class we will be celebrating by reading the book The 100th Day of School. We will also count to 100 forwards and backwards, by 1s, 2s, and 5s. We will count out 100 food items to make our own 100 day trail mix ( m + ms, rice crackers, raisins, chocolate chips, sour bears, tart ice cream candies, sour cherry balls, jelly beans, popcorn, and smarties). Each student will get 10 of each of the above to place in rows on a hundred number chart. If we have time we will draw pictures of what we will look like at 100 years of age.

Please continue to review basic math facts to 10 and 18 with flash cards. Please have your child bring back his/her homework daily as it counts towards their final grade.

Feel free to stop in anytime to help out during Math Class (From 10:25-11:25 daily).

Thanks,

Miss Raskin

January Math News

Hope everyone had an enjoyable break!

In January, We will continue learning about Money. We will be working with pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and half-dollars. The students will be introduced to different dollar bills. We will sort coins, make enough change to "buy" an item (with pretend coins) and learn different ways to make 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents and 50 cents. We will also have a Unit test covering both Time and Money. Topics will include: telling time to the hour and half hour, on analog and digital clocks elapsed time, identifying coins, counting groups of coins, and, using pictures to help solve problems.

Mid-January, We will begin a Unit on Graphing. We will read, interpret and make diffferent types of graphs. The students will learn about bar graphs, pictographs, tally charts, and how to use a bar graph to solve problems.
